About Us

The Spurwink Institute provides a wide variety of specialized clinical and educational services designed to assist individuals and organizations in Maine, nationally and internationally. Current areas of emphasis include special education; assistive technology; universal design; Web accessibility; student accessibility to science, mathematics and literacy; education and training for employees in mental health and behavioral health settings; and research, education and training for employees in the criminal justice settings.

The Spurwink Institute’s consulting, education and training programs focus on students, teachers and staff at all academic levels and employees in the fields of mental health, behavioral health, juvenile justice and adult corrections. The Spurwink Institute works in diverse settings, including K-12 public and private schools, community colleges and universities, mental and behavioral health facilities, jails, prisons and correctional centers, and over the World Wide Web. The Spurwink Institute specializes in providing customized services to individuals, families, state agencies, private businesses, and other not-for-profit organizations.

The Spurwink Institute, formerly The Spurwink Foundation, was established in 1986 as an adjunct of The Spurwink School, which has provided a broad array of treatment and services to meet the diverse needs of children, adolescents and adults who have emotional, behavioral and developmental challenges since 1960. Since 1996, The Spurwink Institute has operated as a separate, free standing not-for-profit organization with its own Mission and Board of Directors.

The Spurwink Institute is currently comprised of six separate initiatives: ALLTech™; the Behavioral Health Sciences Institute; the Institute for Justice Initiatives; the Center for Training and Continuing Education; the University of New England/Spurwink Center for Research; and the Policy Institute for Public Education.
