Universal Design

Universal design (UD) in education means that physical, social, and learning environments are designed so that learner diversity promotes powerful possibilities for teaching and learning.

UD is a framework that guides the selection of flexible, usable, and accessible tools and surroundings, the construction of collaborative and interactive learning opportunities, and the development of learner-centered and constructivist instruction, curriculum, and assessment.

Technology is a tool that supports universal design

  • Allows physical access
  • Facilitates social construction of knowledge
  • Provides for multiple means of learning

Universal design and the infusion of technology into education can transform learning, allowing all students to achieve high learning standards, so they will be prepared for further education and be productive, contributing citizens of their communities.
